Emmaus Houston History
Catherine and Nathaniel Saylor are Roman Catholic Christians in full support of the Mission, Purpose, and Values of Emmaus Ministries.
Catherine first encountered Emmaus as a freshman at Wheaton College, when she met John Green at an Urban Missions Conference in February 1997. At that first meeting, John's passion for the poor and sexually exploited men of Chicago struck her deeply, and she wanted to join in the work of Emmaus. Later that spring, she and a friend organized an Immersion Night for 30 Wheaton College students. The following fall, they recruited a group of 10 weekly volunteers for outreach and Ministry Center service; a faithful group of Wheaton students continues to serve the men of Emmaus every week. Catherine also served as a volunteer in the Ministry Center for two years and as an Outreach Minister for two more years.
