History of Emmaus
John Green first conceived Emmaus Ministries in 1990 while attending graduate school at Wheaton College. Through his work with run-away and street youth at Covenant House in New York City, and conversations with male street prostitutes and social service providers, John felt called by God to provide long-term support for this population of the homeless community. He began doing outreach at night on the streets of Chicago with Dwayne and Muriel Elmer, two professors at Wheaton. Under the guidance of MidAmerica Leadership Foundation (now called goodcity), Emmaus Ministries was incorporated in November of 1990 as a volunteer outreach and support network to young adult men working as prostitutes in Chicago.
After a two-year incubation with MidAmerica, Emmaus gained IRS 501(c)(3) status in June of 1992 and officially became independent of the Foundation on January 1, 1993. During this period, Emmaus developed a working Board of Directors, hired a full time Director, and developed an extensive volunteer outreach effort in three neighborhoods on the north side. In 1993 we opened our doors in the Uptown neighborhood, and in the fall of 1996, we moved to a larger facility at 921 West Wilson Ave, our current location.
