Ministry of Evangelization
Emmaus Ministries is committed to helping men who are involved in prostitution (and at risk of becoming involved in it) to leave the streets and enter a life of faith in Jesus Christ.
An article in the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry by N.R. Coombs (1974) gave this profile of a young man in prostitution:
He is between 15 and 23 years old; is unemployed; has dress, gesture and behavior that are exaggeratedly male; has a poor work history; is of low to average intelligence; is from a deprived socioeconomic background; is of below average educational attainment; is a school dropout; and is from a broken home with poor parent models, a dearth of warmth, and an excess of violence and rejection.
These men who resort to prostitution are at great physical and spiritual risk. Many will die as young men from the violence of street life, disease, or substance abuse. To reach these men quickly, Emmaus Outreach teams must focus on locations and times where male prostitution occurs: on the streets, in the bars, at night.
The Emmaus Outreach teams, who work in male/female pairs, walk the streets, parking lots and bars frequented by men involved in prostitution. These Outreach teams focus on building relationships of trust and respect with the men they meet. As these friendships grow, the Outreach teams begin helping guys take the steps necessary to get off the streets.
To help the Outreach teams in their work, Emmaus publishes a Referral & Reference Book through a partnership with Tyndale House Publishers. This resource is used by Emmaus staff and volunteers on Outreach and by Christian churches and workers throughout the city of Chicago. The purpose of the Referral & Reference book is to meet both the spiritual and physical needs of those on the streets.
